Course Description

1 HOUR OF SOCIAL WORK CONTINUING EDUCATION
THIS COURSE FULFILLS THE SUICIDE PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION REQUIREMENT FOR SOCIAL WORK LICENSURE

In a 2019 Trevor Project survey of transgender adults, 44% stated they had attempted suicide at least once. Incidence of suicidal behavior is far higher among LGBT individuals than the general population, and for those in the helping profession, there is an even uglier statistic: 50% of LGBTQ people report having to educate their doctor or therapist about their identity, their body, or how to treat them.

Course Objectives

This 1-hour training IS NOT a guide to intervention or assessment, which is covered in other trainings; it is a guide to preventative practice, risk factors for suicidality. The course will give clinicians an introduction to:

  1. Applying the NASW core value of social justice to clinical direct practice.
  2. LGBTQ-specific risk factors for suicidality.
  3. Protective factors that clinicians can attempt to bolster.
  4. Suggestions for best practice.
